Some place nice to get stuck in....

Today is a very hot day.  Last year I regretted not having windows on the south side of the barn.  Today Ken was home so I ask if he would mind cutting the windows open. I stuck the ladies outside so that he could start working.

Despite the obstacles in the stalls he managed to measure and cut the openings.  The draft was blowing the dust in his eyes so it made it hard to see.
Now , doesn't that look much better? So much light coming in too.  The horses aren't fussing near as much being in the barn.  I have to keep them in now because the flies are so bad.
Even after the little rain we had it wasn't enough to satisfy the bugs  I put the buckets out last night and collected another 10 gallons of water.  I hauled it over to the garden and put it in the barrel for watering later this week when it becomes really dry again.  I can just imagine if we put our idea in motion for collecting rain water.  The idea is to take the black drain pipe and cut it in half lengthwise to make a "U" shape then nail it to the north and south sides of the barn roof.  We can make it drain right down into the 55 gallon barrels and put a spigot on it so it is easy to water.   If we make a strainer for the top, or small filter it would be good for the animals too.   Wait!   It's on the list of things to do.....
In the heat I decided to move most of the winter manure pile today too.  It is old, so it is o.k. to finish filling the tires in the garden.  Not sure anything will grow in there this year, but it is ready for whenever.   I still have two big trailer full to empty  somewhere. I will probably take it out  back and just do the woods.
