for quite a while from the cyber world. I have tried to keep up with e-mails and my homestead group, but life at home has kept me away.
In this post I will be catching up from right after Thanksgiving and on.
The day after thanksgiving Tom's brother and and old friend and his boys came out to sight in their rifles for hunting season. It was a lot better than previous years when it was wet, heavy snow that they had to go through to get out back. This year it held off until after they were just about done. They were all invited in for coffee and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies afterwards.
The next day we trekked off to church early in the morning to start decorating the sanctuary for Christmas. I hadn't even started our house yet. Kacie stayed the night so she came to help too.
That following Monday was the first day of deer. Nothing. I wasn't to optimistic as there wasn't any snow and it would be hard to see in the woods. Then, last Saturday, Tom went out again. It took Tom until late in the morning to see deer at all. Rebekah was in her glory doing her favorite thing. Greatfully we do have meat in the freezer now.
SIDE NOTE: Here's a hoot though. While he was out, the two black boys got out. Jess went out to grab a stick or two of firewood and they busted out our crappy mud room door. She and I tried getting them in. Calling, ringing the bell, but to no avail. They ran straight back through our property. The snow storm was coming and we couldn't find them. Then they came out of nowhere and were on the porch. It took a week, but we had the game commission come to our door having a report FROM A NEIGHBOR that our dogs were chasing deer. That holds a hefty fine! Well, to say our dogs intentionally were let out to run the woods during hunting season is a big crock! We don't make any problems here, so why are are they busting our butt? They should have come to us first. Everyone knows we drive in circles when the boys get loose, we don't want them out! We can only hope that they don't decide to press charges.
Tom celebrated his 49th birthday on the 5th. We were headed out to see his mom in the hospital that afternoon before going to dinner. The weather turned from nothing to so bad within minutes that we turned around. We came in 20 instead of taking 90 and saw all kinds of cars and trucks sliding and spinning off the road. As we headed west it got a little better. We called Ken and ask if he wanted to meet us in Girard for something to eat. He, Sabrina, and the kids came before we headed home for cake and presents. Jess had baked him a french vanilla cake with orange frosting!
Four days later, Tom got a call from his sister that his mother had passed away. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer the beginging of November, found more than they expected. She was undergoing treatment but yet another set back was found. She wasn't doing well. Wednesday, she ask to see her kids. They all went in and visited. Tom had a chance to talk with her. She was very coherent, but tired and in a lot of pain. He left and came back home with hopes that the girls and I would be able to go in and visit the next day. (We still are struggling with only 1 car) He barely got in when the call came. He couldn't believe it. A few months to a year came in less than four weeks. The funeral will be today. I will post more on that later.
Last night Jessalyn was out finishing chores. She had Stanley with her outside when he became preoccupied with what was going on next door. She looked up and then ran in yelling, "FIRE! FIRE!" The neighbor's house next door was going up in flames. I called 911 as they ran next door. Due to the terrible snow storm, they had a hard time getting the trucks here. There was already a couple of trucks off the side of the road. One was a plow truck that blocked the fastest route to the fire. They called in four companies but due to being a wood frame, there was little they could do unless they were there within the first few minutes. When it was heard that a few fire trucks had slid off the road up at the corner, we knew there was nothing to do but watch it go down. Thankfully the snow ended up being a blessing as all around the house was field which might have caught fire too if it wasn't buried in a foor or more of heavy snow.
Also, Tom called last night and told Becky he will be going to Misawa, JAPAN!
