Been busy

The past two weeks our primary teacher for release time has been down with the flu and such.  I was asked to step in and teach for her while she was out.  Third graders can be hard to sit still and keep interest and the first week was very hard. The teacher wasn't there with lessons and activities, and our music man didn't show!  An open 20 minutes left!  I didn't want to step over how Pam was teaching.  We had lots of extra time left to use and it was wild!  This last week when I had to teach the second consecutive class, I came better prepared and threw caution to the wind.  I just taught the lesson as I best I could and we came out with not enough time.  The kids did great.  I just hope Pam is back and feeling well this Tuesday.

Tom took off work this last week because it was going to a good day outside.  He planned on getting a few last minute things done around the house.   We opened the door, and there was rain!  It was just a little and it lifted enough that he got to go out in the woods for a short tiime before comencing work around here.

In fact, It warmed up enough that we had a few unwanted visitors.

Big bees,  and ladybugs.  Man, they smell!   The only way you can get rid of them is to suck them up in the sweeper.  I have a bagless, and the mess they left behind was gross!   I had to take a paper towel and clean up the cleaning cup.   Ewwww!  They don't look like they invaded to bad, but they were all over the inside of the house.   I tried going out the side door with the dogs and they were just bombarding us.  The dogs couldn't even run in the front yard because they were driving them crazy!

I had apples in the mudroom for three weeks now.  I decided it was time to can them.  Tom wanted me to try sliced apples.  I had done canned for pie, so how hard should it be?   I got them ready and put in the pints.  Added water and a little sugar on top and sealed them.  I cold packed them so they wouldn't turn color.  They leaked, and then I found them floating in the hot bath.   All 18 pints hardly have any water in them.   Yesterday with Jessalyn's help we made brown betty.  A huge one too!  I still have a few jars to use so I guess we will have pancakes this week too.

I also thought I would try my dehydrator.   First onions that smelled so bad that I just swooped them up and put them cut up in the freezer.  Then I tried carrots.   I'm not using it again for veggies.  I might try jerky if Tom gets a deer, but then if that doesn't work out it goes.

This year has been a real flop.   No sustainable garden, no milk, and the only thing I tried to can didn't work.

Tom fixed the mud room floor while it was fairly warm yesterday.   The rain water had rotted it away at the doorway so he replaced some flooring and will be hanging a better drip edge/gutter later this week.  It is so much better.  We were just about to fall through to outside.

Mom and dad are leaving for Florida this morning.  They made sure that Great Grandma (she is 92) got all her check ups and flu shots before they go.   It looks like the weather will be good for the trip down along the coast. It will be quite the adventure!

I heard from my oldest son yesterday!   He has three weeks left in AF  basic.  We talked for a short 5 minutes or so.  He sounded very tired.   He said he isn't looking forward to marching!   He will start survival training this coming week.   There is a channel on tv called the penegon channel.  They showed basic training in Lackland.  We got to see all the stuff that Tommy is doing there and what it looks like. He said he learned to shoot, made it through the gas chamber, and got in trouble for not shaving.   He had to go scrape bird doo doo  outside with a toothbrush.  Could have been worse! I can't wait to fly out to see him!

Jess had a good idea of making cd for Tom.  I went and taped  Great Grandma, Grandma, and Grandpa before they left.   They all made a little video message for me to take down and show him.  Ken was out Friday so I had him make one too.   Having to take care of some issues for Tommy out at his dads later, I will have Becky go  in and get a message from their grandpa too.   I bet he will really like it.
