And here's my help today.
Last night we had Mr. Amish come and show us how to use the stove using coal. We just couldn't get it. Now I know why. He started with a lot of embers just like we do, but then he added coal. A LOT OF COAL! Two bags, to be exact. That means about 80 pounds of coal. Forty per bag. Oh, yeah, it got warm all right. The back hallway read 71 within a hour. Up front it was way warmer than that! Heat just pouring out of the stove. We could never do that.
He told us some of the problem is the draft. The draw isn't good enough. We need to take down the two pines outside the house and see if that will help. They really aren't thick big pines, but just enough branch to give us grief. The next step would be to get a higher chimney.
After he got it going and Tom took him home, I turned on the fans to get it moving through our house. Hmmm....what is that sneaker smell? AGH! it is the flooring under the stove! It never was that hot with wood, but the coal was making it waaaaaay to hot. I took the spray bottle and began spraying the floor. It just steamed. I took the piece of tile out to the mudroom that was from underneath the stove. We had it there to pull out when we used the little electric heater in the morning. I took it out with the stove shovel. It was so hot I couldn't touch it. Tom still not being home, I just unscrewed the sprayer and dumped the water under the stove for fear of what might happen if I did not! HOT HOT HOT!
When he did get home, we opened the front window, the back window, the kitchen window, the bathroom window, and opened the door to the mudroom. The back hall was still staying at 71. About 11:00 p.m. we felt it safe enough to go to bed.
Getting up at 5:00 a.m. the back hall was STILL 71 degrees. Tom came out, opened everything up again. It wasn't scary hot, but just really warm. Haven't touched it yet and it is 11:00 a.m. and still toasty. Did close the windows up about 8:00 a.m. this morning though.
So now we are looking into doing the hearth. Always did want to do one, but now it is the 11th hour. It's how we do things.
