Snow comes and goes over the last month. It was all gone, then one morning we awoke to a deep, deep snow.
It stayed for a long time. It was hard for Tom to keep up with getting wood, so we tried coal. We just couldn't get it to burn like they told us, but with a little wood and a few bricks, it kept up through the nights. Then, one of the families at church offered up some ready to go wood! We borrowed Ken's truck and he and Tom went and filled up the long trailer. Ken managed to pull it right into the yard where we had split other years and unhitched, but the snow was so deep that even his truck couldn't maneuver out.
Tom got the tractor and gave him a running pull and he just pulled right out. What a great little truck!
The snow came down, down, down. Then a little thaw again. Then a freeze. I had to take Jess to AWANA one night and it was awful! I dropped her off and was headed back....slowly.....when I spotted a deer ahead of me. I didn't panic because it was just one. But then I saw four or five standing in the road and they weren't moving! I put on the brakes and sssssssswerved left, then right, then left.........then ssssssssswered right again but the momentum kept me going and it spun me 90 degrees snowplowing with the passenger side of the car right off the road and into and over the ditch. BAM
I called Tom from my cell phone and tried to tell him there was no way he was getting me out. Still, he came with the van. First thing he said to me as I rolled down the window was, "GET OUT!" He knew I was o.k. by the way I talked to him on the phone. We left the car there all night.
He called around and the tow bill was going to be incredible, so he decided to ask Ken if his trusty truck would pull it out. Little did we know that it jumped a log with the back tires too. It took about a dozen tugs and pulls, but Ken's little truck got it out! Over the tree, and from behind the ditch! I was so glad!
As you can see, the minor damage on the bumper. I don't know if it was initial, or when Ken came to pull me out.
Either way, it could have been a lot worse!
Church held the game dinner again this year. I made coleslaw to donate. Tom and Jess worked filleting the fish in the kitchen. They estimated 200 this year.
I still have many butternut squash that I didn't can. A friend at church told me about Lasagna Pie made with butternut squash. It was pretty good!
Jess did some babysitting at our place. The family was getting some renovations done in their home so when their mom went shopping, she dropped off three of her girls here. It was all Jess. She made them lunch, played a few board games, and did some arm wrestling. I was tired just watching her. I suppose I could have these girls at these ages be my grandchildren. Whew! I guess I have all ready bypassed the time of being a fun grandma. I don't know if I have the energy to entertain that many at a time right now!
Happy Birthday to Ken at 22! He is over the hump and onto old manhood. I had to run into town on his birthday so I stopped to give him his gift and Tom brought in pizza to share during lunch break. No cake this year. Things sure seem to change as everyone grows older.
Tommy had to work on his birthday, so on the weekend we celebrated. He had a cake made for him (not by me) and a bit of ice cream. We told him we were going to help him get his car back on the road as again it is giving him problems.
Snow, on and off. You get spring fever, then you huddle next to the wood stove. The canines soak up some sun together. I am glad that everyone gets along with Jack now. Poor Jack had it rough for a while, but now he has friends.
Some days we have to put Miley in the cage while guests come. She isn't bad, but she tends to be overwhelming with her tail and nose to some people. She gives us this sad, sad, face while she is in there. She isn't growling, she has pushed her face up against the side in a pathetic way, wanting to get out. Like a child with his face against the window pane during a snowfall.
