Tom stayed with us Sunday night. Monday morning we all met at Eat n Park for breakfast. Tom and Ken took a few hours off work to join us, and Grandma and Grandpa took time from getting ready to leave for Florida.
After breakfast we took him back over to the recruiting office so he could get his ride back down for final paperwork.
Tuesday morning the girls and I got up early and headed to Pittsburgh. Finally finding parking, we made it in by 9:00, only to wait another hour or so for induction. When we stepped out onto the 19th floor, you knew this was the right place. This was the rug emblem that greeted you right off the elevator.
We stood in the hall waiting for the men and women to file into the conference room. Tom said there were 40 waiting. I watched as they filed in. All kinds of emotions could be seen on their faces. Many had the look of the unknown . Some were gliding in wearing sweat pants and some were buff and wearing T's. As a mom, they all look like they needed a hug. On another plane of thought, I thought that these were going to be the next group of young people preparing to put their lives on the line if needed. After they were all in, the Major came and informed us that we were allowed to enter shortly. Then he closed the door behind him. You could see inside that they were getting their pep talk and instructions. Attention, at ease, yes sir and no sir's.
Then we were allowed in. He addressed the new recruits and told them that he was exiting and when he reopened the door the official ceremony would begin. He stepped outside the door. All was quiet. Then you heard a slow repititous "Tap, Tap, Tap." He entered and addressed the future troops. After a about a 2 1/2 minute event, it was done. I was glad that I could record it all on my digital camera!
I now share my oldest boy with the U.S. Air Force.
After one last round of hugs and kisses (but no tears, Tommy!)
Off he goes to San Antonio for 8 1/2 weeks!
(O.k. now it's o.k to be crying....)
